Reporting Fraud: How You Can Make a Difference

September 9th, 2025

Insurance fraud in New Zealand is not a victimless crime. It may seem distant—something that happens to large companies or in isolated cases—but in reality, every instance of fraud impacts the everyday New Zealander. It pushes up premiums, undermines trust, and diverts resources away from genuine claims.

At the Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB), we work with insurers and the wider public to detect and deter fraud. But we can’t do it alone. That’s why public vigilance is critical. If you suspect insurance fraud, your voice matters—and you can make a difference.

What is Insurance Fraud?

Insurance fraud comes in many forms. It could be someone inflating the value of a car repair, being dishonest about how the damage occurred, staging a burglary, or submitting a claim for damage that never occurred. Sometimes it’s organised and deliberate. Other times, it may come from someone rationalising a lie as “just bending the truth.”

Regardless of intent, the cost of fraud is significant. Estimates suggest that fraudulent claims add tens of millions of dollars each year to the cost of insurance in Aotearoa. Ultimately, it’s honest policyholders who pay the price through increased premiums and longer claim processing times.

Why Reporting Matters

Reporting suspected fraud helps to:

  • Protect honest New Zealanders. Every fraudulent claim increases pressure on the system, contributing to rising insurance costs for everyone.

  • Maintain fairness. Insurance works because policy holders pay our fair share to be protected when things go wrong. Fraud undermines that collective trust.

  • Hold offenders accountable. Those who commit fraud often repeat it. Reporting helps stop patterns of offending early.

  • Preserve vital services. Insurers can focus on helping people who genuinely need support, rather than investigating false claims.

Your action could be the missing piece of a larger investigation. Even if you’re unsure, sharing what you know could help uncover fraud.

How to Report Fraud Confidentially

We understand that reporting someone—especially if it’s a colleague, neighbour, or even a friend—can feel uncomfortable. That’s why the IFB provides a safe, confidential way for you to report your concerns.

Here’s how:

  1. Report Insurance Fraud on our website
    Click ‘Report Fraud’

  2. Submit what you know
You don’t need proof. Share any details you have—dates, names, vehicles, addresses, or suspicious behaviour. The more specific, the better, but every bit of information counts.

  3. Remain anonymous if you wish
You can choose to provide your contact information or remain anonymous. Either way, your privacy is respected. We don’t share your identity with the person you’re reporting.

Once your report is submitted, our team of fraud analysts will assess the information and work with relevant insurers and partners to investigate further.

What Happens Next?

All reports submitted to the Insurance Fraud Bureau (NZ) are treated seriously and confidentially. And we protect your identity when reporting fraud. In some cases, your report may confirm patterns already under investigation. In others, it may help identify new fraudulent activity. While you may not hear back due to privacy reasons, your information plays an essential role in protecting the integrity of the insurance system.

You’re Part of the Solution

Fraud prevention is not just the job of insurers or law enforcement. It’s a collective responsibility—and your actions matter. By reporting suspected fraud, you’re playing an important role in protecting everyone. Your actions help reduce the financial burden on honest policyholders, preserve the integrity of our insurance system, and support a fairer, safer New Zealand for all.

If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts. Reporting is quick, confidential, and one of the most effective ways to stand up against fraud.
